Program Aid Opportunities
Find out what it means to be a leader
We are a community of folks who love the boats and water. We are excited to have you be a part of our group. Our camps are set up first for safety and second for boating skills development.
To be a PA at either or both boating camps the following requirements must be met:
Have completed Program Aid training through GSCO
Be at least 15 years of age - the camps are for older scouts that are Cadette - Ambassador
Have attended at least two camps as a camper at Bear Creek Lake Park or Rueter-Hess Reservior.
*contact us if you need program aid training
PA Responsibilities
Boating camp PAs will:
Help the adults set up and take down camp each day.
Guide the campers in unloading and reloading the boats on trailers at the beginning and the end of camp each day.
Assist the instructors as needed in teaching the skills of a sport and supporting the campers in performing those skills.
Be assigned to an instructor of a particular sport to assist in any duties including non-instruction chores.
Take direction from all camp adults, especially the directors.
Lead crafts, games, and songs during inclement weather or breaks on shore.
Safety
Boating PAs will not be in charge of safety monitoring of campers except when out on the water; then they will help to reinforce all safety protocols to ensure the safety of all. They will be monitored for safety just as the campers are. Being a PA does not always guarantee that they will be on the water for every morning and afternoon session.
Almost every PA we have has has enjoyed the role so much that they have returned subsequent years, and some have gone on to train as instructors. With multiple skill qualifications, returning PAs have been able to rotate in the sports. They do get some opportunities to take boats out on breaks. Our PAs also have the opportunity to lead teams on our fun Friday competition day and control some of those activities, such as the lake scavenger hunt and the relays.
